The Loire région

The Loire is France's royal river. From its source on Mont Gerbier de Jonc in the Ardèche it flows majestically through glorious scenery past magnificent chateaux before pouring into the mighty Atlantic Ocean. The last untamed river of Europe, it is has always been a natural frontier, dividing south from north and posing a formidable barrier against invaders. Until the advent of railways it was the most important commercial axis in France and great cities grew along its route - Nantes, Angers, Tours, Orléans, Roanne, St Etienne and Puy en Velay.

History

Much of French history was played out along its banks. In the 4th century the first monastery in France was founded by St Martin of the Gauls in Poitou and the Saracen advance was halted by Charles Martel in 732 near Poitiers. Anjou was the seat of the Plantagenets: Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henri II and Richard the Lionheart are buried in Fontevraud Abbey. Modern France is said to date from 1429 when, in the mediaeval chateau of Chinon, Joan of Arc persuaded the future Charles VII to accept the crown and take arms against the English. The bloody and barbarous Vendée Wars, France's counter-revolution, blazed across the land from Anjou to the Atlantic.

Culture and history in the Loire Valley

Art & inspiration

Many of France's most famous writers lived in and wrote about the Loire Valley - Rabelais, de Balzac, du Bellay, Abelard, Descartes, Sand and Fournier. And, of course, the chateaux: Chambord, Blois, Chenonceau, Amboise, Azay-le-Ridou and many others grace its verdant banks. All are within easy reach of Château de la Mulonnière and many are included in our wine tours
